The World and RP

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Do you feel as though something in the WoW world compromises your character? Perhaps a lore assumption or a particular quest? Now, I love WoW, but I don’t agree with every quest or idea. Assuming my character is a hero is one of them. Assuming that my character will want to do every quest is another. Some quests go against a moral grain or are plain disgusting.

I’m not going to go into too much detail as I don’t want to spoil anything that people are still learning about in game, but the idea is that you’ve run across something that was either assumed about your character or that you’ve been asked to do by a quest NPC that you don’t agree with. Perhaps you find it against your character’s personal beliefs. Perhaps you find it against your character’s code of cleanliness. (Yes, I did find ones that made me go… EWWW.)

You could even determine that you wouldn’t even be in a certain part of the world to do the quests or instances. Due to wanting to experience the game, there are times when it was either stay in character or miss out on something I really wanted to know about because of lore and story. It can be a hard choice.

However, over the years that I’ve been playing, I’ve discovered something important. You can’t make everything in WoW fit your character perfectly without hindering your character to a certain extent. You may have problems leveling, instancing, or PVPing. I believe that it’s okay to go out of character to experience parts of the game. Not everything has to have happened to your character, if that was true, then we wouldn’t have some of the variety in RP that we do.

Just be true to your character. If you feel you can do certain quests out of character, then that’s fine. Otherwise, if you feel that something goes so far against the grain that you can’t in good conscience do it… then avoid it. Experience and explore the game even if you may have to do parts of it out of character. All are fine. A mixture of any is fine. Just recognize the fact.

A neat idea to end on is the idea of moral quests. The ability to know or have multiple ways to complete a quest so that you could fit it within your character’s RP better. I’m fairly sure that it would be difficult to implement, but it’s still a neat idea.

WoW long and RP!
